Maths workshop: Maths bars race
Once a week, in CEIP Antonio Machado, we use one of maths session to work on workshops. Depending on the course and the topic we want to cultivate, we change the proposal activity.
The workshop explained below was worked with first and second courses of primary education.
1. Aims.

To know the maths bars and their value to use them in mathematical tasks.

To play in small groups.

To follow the game rules.

to foster our pupils cooperative learning.
2. Material need.

Maths bars boxes.
-
10 sides dices.
-
2 tables with the start and finish.
3. Game.
The main aim of the game is
"winning the race".
4. Steps to follow.

Step 1. We need two teams.

Step 2. Throw the dice to know who starts. The first will be the one with the highest number.

Step 3. We start now the game. Throw the dice again and take the bars which corresponds to the number of the dice.

Step 4. Teams roll the dice consecutively.

Step 5. The winner will be the first who arrives to the finsh line.

Optional step. When the race is finished we can ask different questions to the pupils: "Which number has left more in the dice?"; "and less?"; "How many bars has left?" and so on.
