CEIP ANTONIO MACHADO
Maths workshop: Fraction domino

Once a week, in CEIP Antonio Machado, we use one of maths session to work on workshops. Depending on the course and the topic we want to cultivate, we change the proposal activity.

The workshop explained below was worked with the third and forth courses of primary education.

1. Aims.

  1. To relate fractions with their graphic representation.

  2. To compare fractions.

  3. To play in groups.

  4. To follow the game rules.

  5. to foster our pupils cooperative learning.

. Material need.
  1. Hexagonal domino

3. Game.
The main aim of the game is forming a domino using the hexagonal pieces.

4. Steps to follow.

  • Step 1. We need to divide the class into small groups.

  • Step 2. Each group delivers all the pieces among all the players.

  • Step 3. Each player will analyze their pieces and review if they can continue with the game in this round or not.

  • Step 4. If the player can't continue, loses the turn and the following player continues playing.

  • Step 5. The winner is the first to turn out of pieces.

  • Optional step. We can prepare a competition in which they should pass different rounds.

  • Optional step. We ask the pupils for the pieces: "which fractions are on the path?", "which is the representation of the fraction?" and so on.
